HUNTERS POINT SHIIPYARD Federal Superfund Site
History: Arc Ecology was founded in 1983 and in 1984 began monitoring the environmental impacts of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. In 1986 Hunters Point neighborhood groups asked Arc to provide the primarily African American community with on-going technical support. In 1989, Arc and the New Bayview Committee held the first community-wide meeting on the contamination of the base. Since 1990, Arc’s Bayview support activities provided ongoing technical review of all cleanup documents for the shipyard, helped generate 200 jobs and attract over $120,000 in community capacity building grants. Current Activities: Arc chairs the technical committee of the Restoration Advisory Board & coordinates the City-wide response to the redevelopment planning for the Shipyard. TREASURE & YERBA BUENA ISLAND NAVAL STATION
History: Since
1984, Arc Ecology has been the leading San Francisco-based environmental
organization promoting
the toxic cleanup of Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands. 10,000 families will
eventually live on the Islands. Arc’s environmental wathdogging will
ensure it is safe. Current Activities: Arc Ecology Chairs the Treasure Island
Restoration Advisory Board Technical Committee and represents community interests
to the Base Cleanup Team. Community & Regional Partners: The Treasure
Island Wetlands Project, Public Trust Group, SF BayKeeper, TI RAB.
History: In 1987, Arc Ecology was asked by members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to look into rumors of toxic contamination at the Presidio. In 1988, Arc brought the Presidio’s environmental contamination to light and in 1989, Arc held the first San Francisco-wide community meeting on the future of the base. Since then, we’ve provided environmental and skills building support for the RAB for the America’s first urban national park. Current Activities: Arc has provides organizing and political advocacy support to the Presidio RAB and provides organizing training to RAB members. Community & Regional Partners: Friends of the Presidio, Sierra Club, San Francisco Tomorrow, Urban Estuary Project, Presidio RAB.
History: In 1997, Arc Ecology brought suit against Point Molate for over 250,000 violations of the Clean Water Act. Current Activities: Negotiations with the Navy resulted in accelerated cleanup to meet CWA requirements. Community & Regional Partners: West County Toxics Coalition, SF BayKeeper, Earthwatch.
History: In 1997 Arc was asked by the community and the East Bay Conversion and Reinvestment Commission to provide environmental technical support to this poor urban, industrial community. Current Activities: Arc currently coordinates technical review and comments for the RAB to the Army and regulators. Community & Regional Partners: West Oakland Communities, Sierra Club, OAB RAB.
ALAMEDA NAVAL AIR STATION Federal Superfund Site
History:
Arc Ecology has been active around environmental issues at NAS Alameda
since 1986.
Current
Activities: Arc chairs the technical committee of the Restoration Advisory
Board. In 1999 together with community partner, West End Citizens, we obtained
regulator support and the Navy’s agreement to close a former base park
because of high risk for PCB exposure and we are currently advising local Alameda
neighborhood groups on how to secure an EPA technical assistance grant.. Community & Regional
Partners: West End Citizens, NICHE, Audubon Society, NAS RAB.
History:
In 2001, Community activists and neighbors surrounding the closing Concord
Naval
Weapons Depot.
Arc Ecology
and our community
partners succeeded in reviving the moribund Concord Naval Weapons Depot Restoration
Advisory Board, and expand the RABs membership to include nearby residents.

MARE ISLAND NAVAL SHIPYARD - California Superfund Site
History: Since
1993, Arc has been the primary technical support for the Vallejo community
regarding military pollution. With Arc’s help the RAB was able to provide
review and comment on more than 50 cleanup reports over the last five years
and stop the reuse of a lead contaminated housing facility until the metal
was cleaned. Current Activities: Arc Ecology Chairs the Mare Island Restoration
Advisory Board Technical Committee. Serves as the fiscal sponsor of the San
Francisco Bay Flyway Festival.
