Arc Ecology's Bay Area ProjectsRidding 27,000 acres of prime San Francisco Bay Area urban core property of over 1000 toxic sites and rehabilitating three of the region's largest Superfund sitesAs a result of the last four rounds of base closures, the Bay Area now has some 27,000 acres of former military property transitioning to the civilian sector. These properties are, by and large, highly contaminated. Nevertheless, federal and state environmental regulations have the potential for enabling these properties to be restored to levels of environmental quality not seen in the urban core in decades. The actual physical reduction of toxic sources on these bases will protect future tenants and contribute substantively to improvements in the quality of health in the minority and poor communities surrounding these facilities. Proper restoration of these properties can result in their transfer without deed restrictions and other institutional controls which can chill the investment market for the former base.
