The
Yosemite Slough Watershed Restoration Project(YSWRP) is a collaborative cleanup and restoration
project headed up by Arc Ecology
Project
Goal:
To identify and address water quality impact on Yosemite Slough, and improve water quality for
the Bayview/Hunters Point community of San Francisco
Components
of this project include:
Community-based Watershed
Assessment to Identify Water Quality Impacts on the Yosemite
Creek/Slough Watershed
Planning Processes Restoration and Management Community
Training/Education of Water Quality and Storm Overflow Community
Technical Assistance and Capacity-building Urban Water Quality
Best Practices
The YSWRP is a multi-organizational endeavor to identify and address the water quality impacts of the Yosemite Creek/Slough on the
Bayview/Hunters Point Community of San Francisco. The project phases will involve assessment, planning, monitoring and the development
of a future model for urban water quality and ecosystem restroration in an environmental justice context. Results of this project
will be used to compile a report on the feasibility of large-scale toxic removal and acquisition of land for the creation
of open space, natural stormwater treatment, and wetlands restoration. Yosemite Slough, pictured above, is now contaminated with sewage,
urban waste and garbage, and toxic chemical and metal seepage from Parcel E of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
TheYSWRP is a model for an urban watershed restoration- planning process that focuses on the ongoing environmental justice and social
equity concerns of the Bayview Hunters Point community. The project will also promote point-source pollution solutions,
wetlands restoration, habitat improvement, and promote skills transfer from environmental consultants to community
participants. In addition, it will promote improved access to the bay, restoration activities, toxic cleanup and a
variety of opportunities for ongoing environmental education.
